Powering the Next Generation of Sustainable Farming
About the Client
Going where no UK farmer dares
Accelerating Innovation in Sustainable Agriculture
Green Futures Biofuel is a UK agri-tech spinout developing one of the first fully off-grid vertical farming walls—designed to cut energy usage, reduce infrastructure costs, and deliver reliable year-round crop production. Their mission was to offer growers a practical, commercially viable alternative to traditional vertical farming systems, which are typically limited by high electricity demands and complex operational setups.
They partnered with us to validate market demand, strengthen their commercial proposition, and build the evidence base required for early-stage investment. Our support included prototype development, refinement of their value proposition, SEIS/EIS preparation, creation of investor materials, and coordination of national research trials to prove both technical performance and financial viability.
Through this process, Green Futures Biofuel secured over £350,000 in grants and angel investment, completed successful pilot trials across multiple research institutions, and launched their first commercial-ready off-grid farming system. This momentum ultimately led to the company’s acquisition by a major UK grower, positioning the technology for large-scale deployment.
Challenges
Creating a Product for a new market
Challenges
Navigating the Tough Realities of Modern Vertical Farming
Green Futures Biofuel entered the market at a moment when UK agriculture was facing one of its most turbulent chapters. Brexit had reshaped trading landscapes, electricity and water costs were climbing sharply, and many farms were under immense pressure—scaling back operations, fighting to stay afloat, or selling up entirely. In this environment, vertical farming promised hope, yet its reality was weighed down by high energy demands, long payback periods, and complex, expensive infrastructure. Adoption across the UK remained slow, and growers were hesitant to gamble on new systems that looked costly and unproven.
Into this uncertainty stepped Green Futures Biofuel, offering an off-grid alternative powered by biofuel. But before farmers would believe in it, the team had to overcome deep scepticism. Growers needed to see real proof: consistent yields, lower operating costs, and a system that worked year-round without relying on the grid.
At the same time, the company was racing to become investment-ready. Securing funding required more than a bold vision—it demanded a working prototype, trials with respected research partners, and solid data proving both technical reliability and commercial potential.
As a young spinout, they also needed guidance. Refining their value proposition, shaping a clear narrative, and telling a compelling story to investors became just as important as the technology itself.
