Operated by Oxford Innovation (oxin), the UK’s leading provider of business support and innovation centres, ICKG sits at the heart of the university’s Knowledge Gateway—one of the Government’s designated University Enterprise Zones. Its mission is to nurture the growth of digital, creative, and technology-focused businesses across the region.
ICKG offers flexible office space, fully equipped meeting and conference facilities, and specialist business support designed specifically for startups and early-stage companies. Through oxin’s extensive expertise, businesses at the centre gain access to high-quality mentoring, strategic networks, research collaborations, and a dynamic community that fuels innovation.
As the focal point of the Knowledge Gateway, ICKG acts as a bridge between entrepreneurs and the university’s world-class research, student talent, and fast-growing ecosystem of innovative organisations. As a growing innovation hub within the University of Essex’s Knowledge Gateway, the Innovation Centre, Knowledge Gateway (ICKG) faced several challenges that limited its ability to fully showcase its value. Despite being operated by Oxford Innovation (oxin), many local founders, partners, and early-stage businesses were not fully aware of ICKG’s flexible workspace, business support services, and access to university research and talent. This visibility gap made it harder for the centre to consistently attract the innovative companies it was built to serve.
With the Knowledge Gateway designated as a University Enterprise Zone, ICKG was also under pressure to better demonstrate its regional impact. The centre needed clearer storytelling, stronger messaging, and more cohesive marketing to highlight its successes and the benefits of being part of a university-driven innovation ecosystem.
